Vanessa Asolo, also known as MC FLOWER, is an intelligent and gifted young woman who is making a tremendous impact through her hip hop practices. Her work is encouraging parents to support their childrenʼs activities of self- expression and inspiring both young and old to celebrate their creative talents. At the age of seven MC Flower joined the Bavubuka Foundation’s Music and Arts Creative Workshops and since then she has represented the future generation of Ugandaʼs burgeoning hip hop culture on numerous national stages with internationally and nationally celebrated artists such as Nneka, Kween G,
Babaluku, Sifa Kele, Atlas and Tshila. Now, at just 10 years of age, she has just been elected for her second term as Entertainment Minister at Makindye Junior School where she humbly celebrates celebrity status. Both in her community and nationally MC Flower is showcasing her critical thinking and passion for child advocacy through freestyling and her Luga Flow indigenous hip hop practices which are being highlighted across Uganda on both radio and television platforms.
MC Flower is a regular performer at International Womenʼs Day and Earth Day celebrations and has also performed at Power of Hope Mulago Pediatric Kids Camp and Uganda Youth Conference. She has been featured on NTV Celebrity Kids as the first and youngest hop hip woman to hit the media waves. She is an integral part of the young Phenomenal Womenʼs team and is always contributing to her community and her peers through creative outreach opportunities. She is the first student to be permitted by her school to run a series of hip hop creative work shops through Bavubukaʼs Kids for Kids Hip Hop Outreach Program; this is the fulfillment of a promise she made to her peers at the assembly announcing her election as Entertainment Minister. MC Flower is currently developing her web series called “Letʼs Chat”. We can add that to the list of “firsts” this creative, passionate youngster will have accomplished before her tenth birthday!

Knowledge is power - Teach them their history, reconnect them to the greatness of their ancestors, lead them on a path filled with the strength of those who fought and sacrificed to brake the bondage of the physical captivity planting the seeds of a liberated independent Afrika. Let these walls rekindle that spiritual awakening creating that burning desire to restore a sense of self worth, dignity , and love for our beloved land. let their gifts be inspired to speak boldly, expressing all their positive creativity to build a legacy for the generations to come. This is our journey to encourage all young men and women to be fully reconnected to their indigenous pride. Through the resurrection of these powerful brave resilient souls of our ancestors they will from now and on have a point of reflection to move all mountain mightier and stronger. So very proud of the work Justin Justkas Kasereka has shared with us and continues to develop on his series of revolutionary leaders. This December2012 -January2013 Kasereka joined us in Uganda to share his art, to run dialogues with the Congolese community in Uganda and inspire all of us with his hard work and passion for progress in DRC and the United States of Africa ;)

Merita Movement is happy to be supporting the work of this fervent young artist in his upcoming exposition. Much love, our Brother.

Movement Initiator Babaluku Uganda on K-Files NTV Uganda talking the history and innovation behind the Luga Flow Movement (starting at 4:00). Watch through to the end to catch MC Ship and the Phenomenal young MC Flower Vanessa spit a little bit of that Luga Flow. Much love to Bavubuka Dynasty and Bavubuka Allstars Foundation for the many years of seeding creativity and expression amongst the young people of Uganda and East Africa.

Merita Movement is always a proud partner to the work and creativity, elevating the archives and current progressions to see all success for the growth of the youth in Uganda and across the continent.

La vita e bella..

Going through the Merita Movement footage has got me beaming today..

Life is uniquely designed for each of us.. To be fearlessly on this path feels as though my whole existence (a combination of character/personality, the abilities I’ve been given, circumstances I’ve never understood, and the people I’ve met along the way) all beautifully entwine into an intricately woven web of opportunity. Within this movement we encourage ourselves and the young people we come across to ‘do what you love’, and for me, that is a fusion of spirit lead creative expression and social dialogue…

After an interview I recently did, the interviewee pointed out how I have been given the opportunity to showcase exceptional individuals who in tern share their thoughts, visions and the things that THEY love to do. Through the making of this film I am being taught more and more about myself and the diversity of the people around me. What a blessing and an honour.

So very grateful for the work and the voices who have been willing to participate in the movement so far.. Celebrating Merita (Africa), our beloved people and our beloved land.

Asante,

Christine Michelle, Movement Initiator

When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said ‘Let us pray.’ We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land. — Desmond Tutu (via ourafrica)

Connecting with your unique self:
Celebrating the voices we have met and captured on our beloved journey,  The Merita Movement met up with Ognian Petrov and Diego M Escalera of ’Wizards of Love’ in Tulum Mexico. Ognian graced us with a beautiful interview for our upcoming documentary, sharing with us a vision and hope for each of us.
Ognian tells us “What I dream I feel, what I feel I think, what I think I say, and what I say I do. Discovering your unique identity creates an internal centre of personal truth from your dreams to manifestation. When you start functioning that way, your dreams start to align and emerge on the never-ending quest of ‘this is what I am here to do in life’.”
